Indigenous Connections and Collections Library Blog – Boarding Schools
-
The objective of government and Christian-run Indian boarding schools, also called industrial schools, was civilization and assimilation of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children into American culture. Forced removal of children to 408 boarding schools, across 37 states, including 21 schools in Alaska, and 7 in Hawai’i, worked toward the erasure and destruction of tribal language, cultural, and spiritual beliefs. This month’s library blog will connect readers to online and print resources.
