The Constitution, written in 1787, proclaims “We the people…establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessing of liberty…”. 107 years prior, Ohkay Owingeh leader Po’Pay embodied these values to rid his people and other Indigenous civilizations of violent Spanish rule and sustained Pueblo culture through the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. IPCC Cultural Educator Jon Ghahate explores the history and significance of the Pueblo Revolt in a series of presentations, including a knotted yucca cord demonstration, which helped the individual Pueblos coordinate the timing of the revolt against the Spanish.
