BOB CHAVEZ SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE ARTS 2024 RECIPIENTS
We are proud to announce the 2024 recipients of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center’s Bob Chavez Scholarship for the Arts.
Tyler Suazo, of Santa Clara Pueblo, and Erin Meehan, of Isleta Pueblo, will each be awarded a $2,500 scholarship for the 2024-2025 school year to help offset the initial costs of higher education, such as books, housing, tuition, and supplies.
Part of IPCC’s mission is to preserve and perpetuate Pueblo culture, and a key element of that is investing in our youth. This scholarship is named in honor of Manuel “Bob” Chavez of Cochiti Pueblo, who dedicated 50 years as a volunteer teaching art at St. Catherine’s Indian School.
Many students were able to explore Native arts and feel at home in Mr. Chavez’s classroom, and IPCC can continue his legacy of encouragement by offering $2,500 scholarships each year to recent Pueblo high school seniors or college undergraduates who are pursuing visual arts in higher education. The scholarship requires the students to maintain full-time enrollment and a GPA of 2.0 or above.
Initial scholarships are for $2,500 per student per year, but matching funds from the Dume Wolverine Foundation have allowed IPCC to extend the amount to $2,500 per student per semester.
Tyler Suazo
Tyler Suazo is a member of Santa Clara Pueblo, and a recent graduate of the Santa Fe Indian School. Tyler will be starting his freshman year enrolled at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado to pursue a degree in Studio Arts with a minor in Digital Design.
Erin Meehan
Erin Meehan is a member of Isleta Pueblo, and a recent graduate of the New Mexico Academy for the Media Arts. Erin will be starting her freshman year enrolled at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Sante Fe, New Mexico to pursue a degree in Studio Arts with a minor in Creative Writing.
The recipients of IPCC’s Bob Chavez Scholarship for the Arts are selected based on financial need, an essay addressing their purpose in pursuing arts, their grade point averages, and a portfolio featuring their works of art. Applications are evaluated by a scholarship review committee before the selections are made.
Please join us in congratulating Tyler Suazo and Erin Meehan and wishing each of them well in their academic and artistic endeavors. Both have bright futures ahead of them and are carrying on the proud legacy of Pueblo culture.
