Indigenous Peoples Day

Indigenous Peoples Day is a holiday celebrated on the first Monday in October. Historically, the United States recognized this as Columbus Day in recognition of the Italian explorer. As a counter narrative to this celebration, activists and indigenous peoples started a movement to celebrate the indigenous peoples of North American in place of the problematic history begun by Columbus. In 2015, the city of Albuquerque joined the movement instating Indigenous Peoples Day in place of Columbus Day.
