The Eagle Dance

This mural presents a Zuni eagle dancer dancing among two bald eagles. The strength and power of the eagles are emphasized by strong strokes of paint in the background. Hughte paints with immense passion and energy.

The Artist

Phil Hughte was born at Zuni Pueblo, and started painting when he was about seven years old. He chose ballpoint pen and acrylic paint to draw and paint everyday life of his Zuni people and village. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northern Arizona University, and then became an art teacher at Twin Buttes High School in Zuni. Phil also took a unique look into the legacy of Frank Hamilton Cushing at Zuni Pueblo, and his influence on the Zuni people. The book of Hughte's cartoons depicts Cushing at various periods and important moments of his career at Zuni.
